Do you ever struggle with your attitude, or am I the only pastor’s wife who does? The truth is, we all do at times.
Just yesterday, I had a doctor’s appointment, and I wasn’t feeling very well. I found myself being a little negative. Later, I thought to myself, “What was that about?”
I’m so grateful for gentle reminders from the Holy Spirit. He reminded me that I hadn’t spent time with the Lord that morning. That’s rare for me, but obviously, it still happens.
What I know… skipping my Jesus time affects my attitude. It’s probably always been that way for me, but I notice it more quickly now. I don’t want to be a negative woman. I desire to be positive and encouraging to everyone I meet.
But that doesn’t always come naturally.
We all deal with what I call “stinky flesh.” And believe me, I struggle with mine daily. I struggle with pride. I struggle with selfishness. I struggle with wanting my own way. Yep, you guessed it! I’m stinky flesh, just like everyone else. Not that you would’ve ever doubted that!
Being a pastor’s wife doesn’t make me immune to any of these struggles. I need the Lord’s grace and help every day.
Jesus said, “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, NLT)
I see that truth in the everyday things—even in my attitude at a doctor’s appointment.
What I know… my time with Jesus really does prepare me for the day. When I wake up on the struggle bus, choosing to get up, spend time in the Word, talk with the Lord, and listen for His gentle voice helps me face the day with a heart more prepared to respond with grace.
That doesn’t mean every day will be easy or that I’ll suddenly have unlimited energy. Sometimes I still feel tired and don’t feel like doing the things I need to do. Being physically tired isn’t a spiritual failure. But time with Him helps me recognize what’s happening in my heart and surrender it to Him.
And when I miss that time or allow my attitude to get out of sorts, I’m thankful I can turn to God immediately and ask for His help. What I know… He is right there, ready and willing to help me.
I’m still growing. Still learning. Still in need of His gentle reminders and grace.
But this much I know… I need Jesus every single day.
Can you relate? What is your biggest struggle right now? I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Share only what you feel comfortable sharing.
